Quitting Your Nicotine Addiction For Good - Tips to Help You Quit Cigarettes

Author: Stan Martino

Quitting Your nicotine addiction is one the most important things you can do for yourself. We all know the dangers of smoking today. Studies and scientific proof have shown us that it is dangerous to smoke and that second hand smoke can be just as dangerous. Long term smokers often face respiratory problems such as emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and even mouth, throat, and lung cancers. Most states have now passed anti-smoking laws in most public places including bars and restaurants. It is an awful habit, it stinks and it makes you stink. Need more?

Quitting smoking will probably be one of the most difficult things you will ever do but quitting now will greatly reduce your risk of complications down the road. There are a few things you can do to get yourself prepared once you have decided enough is enough. Believe me once you quit and see how good you start feeling you won't miss the cigarettes or crave the nicotine any longer.

First you need to see when it is that you most crave cigarettes, is it first thing in the morning, with the morning coffee, or after a nice dinner. Do you "have" to have a cigarette to fall asleep? How about exercising? Do you crave that nicotine fix after you have done something really healthy for yourself? Knowing the times you crave cigarettes the most can help you in finding ways to avoid those situations.

Next you need to find the ways to get through the cravings. Willpower isn't enough and telling yourself "I won't smoke" just won't cut it. The physical and mental withdrawal symptoms are extremely strong, so strong that you will more than likely be very irritable and not particularly friendly to those around you. You have to find something that works to distract your body from knowing it isn't getting its nicotine fix. If you crave a cigarette while drinking your coffee, limit your coffee intake for the time being. If you crave one after a heavy workout, do a softer, slower workout.

The third tip is to stay away from the stores where you used to buy your cigarettes. Try to steer clear of others who smoke if there is a smoking spot outside your work entrance, Use a different entrance for a while. If you normally lunch with a group of smokers beg off for a while because it sure isn't easy to quit when someone is constantly blowing smoke in your face. This may seem harsh and over the top but it is necessary to beat the nicotine habit.

Step four would be to clean your home, car, purse or pockets of any smoking contraband. Cigarettes, lighters, matches, Etc. get rid of it all you don't need the constant temptations around you right now. Buy a few air fresheners and use them in the areas where you used to smoke.

Number five is to change all your habits. If you normally drink your coffee at the kitchen table and have a cigarette, have your coffee in the living room instead. Go outside and get some fresh air, just don't go to a spot where you have stood and smoked before.

Six would be to think about how you will feel once you have quit for good and no longer have the cravings. Keep your eye on the prize so to speak. Think about how great it will feel to tell the world that you don't smoke and be proud of it. Keep encouraging and praising yourself. Jot yourself some notes, email yourself messages, Etc treat yourself special because you are doing yourself a great favor by giving up smoking.

Do not let yourself fall into the "I can't" trap... Know that you can and will do this... You will know you have finally made it when walking past a bunch of smokers smells awful instead of wonderful and if you slip up and "fall off the wagon" don't give up... get up and try again... Eventually it will work and you will be able to live a healthier, smoke free existence.

You will feel better, breathe better and have more energy not to mention all that money you will save in the long run. Save it up and buy yourself something special when you finally toss the habit for good.
