How to Get the Most From Your Life Coaching Sessions
By Natalie Dee

Life coaching is a joint exercise between you and your coach. You too may contribute towards making the coaching sessions a success. Life coaching is about mutually exploring ideas and choices that make sense.

This is a five step process for getting the most out of your life coaching sessions.

1. Commitment: Whether your focus is life coaching or business coaching, the onus is on you to want to make changes in your life or your work. Therefore the priority is that you are committed to this process; it is this commitment from you, the client, which makes the process so effective.

2. Focus: To benefit from the coaching process you need to be focused and this goes hand in hand with avoiding interruptions; make sure you have your coaching session in an environment where you will not be disturbed at all, and definitely avoid any calls where possible.

3. Prioritise - you are important: During the coaching session it is important that the focus is on you, your life, the changes you want to make and the goals you want to achieve. You may need to put other people's concerns aside for a while. Remember, you are important here; and often when we focus on ourselves and the areas that are important to us in our lives, we find that this has a positive impact on others around us too.

4. You are the Boss: A life coach does not give advice; the role of the coach is to challenge your current thoughts and beliefs, to enable you to come back with different ones, thereby giving you the possibility to do things differently and achieve different outcomes in your life.

5. Be Open to Change: With commitment and focus you will find that within a small number of life coaching sessions, you will begin to experience positive changes. Be open to this and allow whatever new thoughts, ideas and beliefs that start to show up, to just be. The aim is to create the change you desire, and sometimes the path to achieving this is not all that obvious. Stay with the process; the effect is often profound with the smallest of intervention over a short period of time.

The coaching environment gives you the space and time to focus on yourself and what matters most to you in your life or business at this point in time. Most people don't take the time to think about what they are doing or want to be doing, they just plod along with their existing routine; this often leads to dissatisfaction. People who use coaching to their benefit are pleased with the results, the ease of achieving what they set out to achieve, and tend to use the coaching process as and when they decide to set new goals in their lives.

All the best.
